TROY, AL (WSFA) -

The City of Troy will soon be a smoke-free city. Tuesday night, the city council passed an ordinance banning smoking in public places.

"People can still smoke at home, in their own cars, and in other private places," said City Council President Johnny Witherington.

Business owner Richard Jones, who owns a Hookah bar, said the ordinance has diversified his business. "Now, the non-smokers still get to come inside and have a good time, and if you want a hookah, you can go to the outside area." Jones says it still works in his favor.

The legislation strengthens a 2006 ordinance that previously allowed some businesses such as bars and restaurants to have smoking if they had a separate, smoke-free area.
