Hard Rock to hold summer music camp in West Springfield

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

While Hard Rock continues to negotiate a host community agreement with the city, the company announced plans today for a summer music camp.

"Music is in our DNA," said Tim Maland, president of Hard Rock New England. "It is who we are."

And following their open house meetings with city residents, Hard Rock officials came up with the idea of a summer music camp.

"The opportunity to do this for the community is going to be a reward for us, not only from a business point of view, but psychologically or emotionally this is a great partnership for us," said Maland.

The two-day camp, which is a first of its kind for Hard Rock, will have what they call "world class" instructors or musicians known throughout the industry. While officials would like to see campers with some music experience, beginners are welcomed too.

"We are going to get into instruction, classes and song-writing," said Annie Balliro, Hard Rock's worldwide director of philanthropy. "The second day will be a lot of practicing and rehearsals. We will even do a little bit of styling before we do our big talent show."

There is a registration cap of 100 students and there is a fee of $20 per camper.

"That money is going into a foundation that is going to be used to contribute music equipment, which is going to be donated to the schools of West Springfield," said Maland.

While the focus of the summer camp is on the kids, Hard Rock knows they want the attention of the parents.

"The whole project is very positive," Maland stated. "The reaction, once we explain the benefit of the project to the local residents, they support it. We believe this type of arrangement, of a summer music camp, is going to be very rewarding for the children of the residents here who are going to be voting."

Hard Rock hopes to have that vote in early September.

The music camp will be held at West Springfield High School on Aug. 14 and Aug. 15. It is open to city students, ages 9 to 17.
