EUTAW, Ala. (AP) - A former Greene County Circuit Court clerk accused of stealing more than $138,000 has been found guilty.

Etta Edwards was convicted Thursday of first degree theft of property and WBMA-TV reports (http://bit.ly/11Md8uP ) she faces between three and five years in prison.

Edwards was charged in 2011 with stealing money that had been paid to the court system.

Prosecutors accused Edwards of stealing, but Edwards' defense attorney said it was only sloppy bookkeeping.

State auditor Isagore McGee testified on Wednesday that he found $94,000 in suspect transactions during a routine examination. After auditing office records, McGee said he determined that $138,000 had gone missing.

McGee has said Edwards told him that she didn't know about the problems or suggested that someone might have broken into her office to steal the money.
