Southwick hosts final national motocross event

SOUTHWICK, MA (WSHM) -

Thousands of motocross fans made their way into town on Saturday to bid farewell to one of the oldest tracks on the national circuit.

The day marked what is likely the final run of the Moto-X 338 National.

Promoters said they were unable to strike a new deal with the American Legion post that owns the track.

The event is the only national event held in New England each year, and it attracts race fans from across the region and beyond.

Those in attendance told CBS 3 that it was a sad day for motocross fans.

"Southwick has always been like the Mecca of motocross for New England," said Brian Beasley, a Maryland resident to made the trip to Southwick. "I don't know the logistics of what Southwick is losing, but I'm sure for this area it will be a great blow to the community."

"It's different from any other track," said Connecticut resident Eric Cooley. "It's a famous track, and it's basically our hometown track. We've ridden here before. I'm a woods man and beat it up in the sand."

The big winner of Saturday's event was Ryan Dungey, who hails from Waconia, MN.

Western Massachusetts native John Dowd finished 24th.

CBS 3 will have more on the Moto-X 338 finale Sunday night on Valley Sports Replay.

The fate of an iconic landmark in one western Massachusetts town is in jeapordy.    The old train depot in East Longmeadow near the center of town is a very familiar sight to residents.  Built in 1876, it's image even adorns the town seal.   However, the fate of the land it sits on is up in the air, and so is the future of the depot.
