Erie County: Body found in burning car under investigation

ERIE COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

The Erie County Sheriff's Department is investigating after a body was found in a burning car Sunday morning.

It happened in the Milan Wildlife area along Lover's Lane Road in Milan Township just north of the Erie-Huron County line.

The Sheriff said a passing motorist called in the car fire just after 6 a.m.

"Something's not right. Something's going on...I'm not sure," said one park visitor.

"I was definitely shocked because this is more of a quieter area, just a path. Then I saw the tow truck and all the crime scene vehicles out front. I wondered what was going on," said Brandy Daugherty of Fremont.

The body was burned beyond recognition and investigators on scene couldn't even say if the victim was a man or woman.

"Someone knew the area, had to have known the area to be able to drive back here, to set everything on fire," Daugherty said.

"There's been trouble here before," said another frequent visitor the wildlife area.

Erie County Sheriff, Paul Sigsworth, tells 19 Action News that a license plate salvaged from the scene lead them to the home of a 33 year old woman from Norwalk, who hadn't been seen in more than a day, and evidence that this was a possible suicide.

But until positive identification and cause of death are determined, investigators are still treating this as a homicide case.

The autopsy will be handled by the coroner in Lucas County.

Deputies are still investigating.
