Boy, 14, fatally shot his father, police say

SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

Police said they have a teen in custody in connection with his father being shot and killed Tuesday afternoon.

Shawnee police said they are working to figure out why the 14-year-old boy shot and killed his father. The teenager is in custody, and his mother and stepfather are being questioned.

On Wednesday, police identified the victim as Darren Gay.

It was supposed to be a routine custody exchange between two sets of parents, but the afternoon ended in tragedy.

"Mom and stepdad apparently went inside the business, while the son went to contact his father. When he did, the son produced a handgun and shot his father," said Maj. Bill Hisle with the Shawnee Police Department.

Hisle said the teen then told his mom and stepfather what he did, and they called 911. Within minutes, police swarmed the Lindsay Auction and Realty Service near 47th Street and Frisbie Road, the scene of the shooting.

"It's kind of shocking actually. You wouldn't expect a 14-year-old to do something like that, especially to his own parents," said neighbor Rylan Sutton.

The initial questioning of the suspect and the parents yielded little information.

"We see a lot of things, but it was just shocking. You don't hear that very often," Hisle said. "Certainly we're investigating right now what may have lead up to this tragedy. We do not have a motive and do not know why this occurred."

Also unclear is how the teenager got the weapon.

"I have no information about the weapon, other than it was a handgun. I don't know who the ownership belongs to, no make, or model or caliber," Hisle said.

The name of the suspect has not been released. The teenager remains in police custody, and it's too early to determine whether he'll be charged as an adult or a juvenile.
