TN official demoted after comparing water complaints to terrorism

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT PLEASANT, TN (WSMV) -

The Tennessee state official who compared water quality concerns to terrorism has been demoted.

For months, people in Mount Pleasant have been sharing their worries about water quality in that area.

But during a meeting last month, Sherwin Smith, a deputy director with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, said repeat complaints about water could be considered an act of terrorism.

The agency said Smith made a poor choice of words, and he has since been moved back to the State Revolving Fund Program, which is a lower-ranking position.
