The Southern League announced Wednesday morning
that OF Kevin Kiermaier, 1B Cameron Seitzer, DH Mikie Mahtook and LHP Enny
Romero will represent the Biscuits as members of the 2013 South Division
All-Star Team in Jacksonville for the Southern League All-Star Game on July 17.
After an injury-riddled 2012 season, Kiermaier has had a breakout
season for the Biscuits. The 23-year old centerfielder leads the league in
batting average (.317), hits (101) and triples (9), while sitting second in the
league in runs scored (60). A former 31st round pick out of Parkland College in
Illinois, Kiermaier is on pace to set Biscuits single-season records in hits,
triples and runs scored.
After a mediocre April, Romero has turned into one of the most
dominant pitchers in the Southern League. Overall the left-hander is tied for
the league-lead in wins (8) and has a top-10 ERA (2.69). The numbers lately for
Romero, however, have been even more impressive. The 22-year old out of the
Dominican has seven wins and a 1.59 ERA in his last 10 starts. Through the
month of May, Romero had a stretch of 30.1 consecutive-innings without
surrendering an earned run.
Seitzer and Mahtook are the only two players to have played in
every game (84) this season. Seitzer, 23, is hitting .275 with a .374
on-base-percentage. He is on the league-leader boards with 21 doubles (tied for
first), 84 hits (fourth) and 44 walks (tied for fourth). Seitzer spent all of
2012 with Low-A Bowling Green. Without playing an inning in High-A in his
career, Seitzer started with the Biscuits this year.
A former first round pick out of LSU, Mahtook is hitting .238 with
18 doubles, seven triples, four home runs and leads the team with 46 RBI.
Although Mahtook has dropped out of the league's top-five in extra-base hits
and RBI, he has been one of the main run-producers for the Biscuits throughout
the season. The 23-year old from Lafayette, Louisiana was a mid-season call-up
to the Biscuits last year in his first professional season before starting in
Montgomery in 2013.
LHP C.J. Riefenhauser and RHP Juan Sandoval were both selected as
honorable mention All-Stars. Riefenhauser was eligible before being promoted to
AAA Durham. Sandoval was not eligible because he was not a member of the
Southern League at the time of the ballots distribution.
The Mobile BayBears led the South Division with seven members
selected to the All-Star squad. Mississippi has six selections. Jacksonville
has five selections and Pensacola with three.
There have now been 41 Biscuits selected as Mid-Season All-Stars.
