DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

According to officials, the city of Decatur is currently experiencing widespread flooding of streets and low lying areas. The Decatur Police Department is requesting that people in the Decatur area to use caution when traveling and under no circumstances to attempt to drive through standing water.

Due to the high volume of rainwater runoff, authorities are reminding parents to closely monitor children in the vicinity of drainage ditches. Law enforcement urges not call 911 to inquire about the status of streets.

Several roads have been shut down in Madison County because of flash flooding. The roads currently closed include:

  • Capshaw Road east of Wall Triana to Nance Road
  • Rock Creek Blvd and Old Railroad Bed Road
  • Walden Glen and Browns Ferry Road
  • Hatley Rd. and Burgreen Road
  • Palmer Rd. between Palmer Park and Tribble
  • Entrance and exit of Arbor Trace off County Line
In Morgan County, roads currently closed include:

  • Danville Rd. at Danville High School
  • S Poole at Danville Rd.
  • S Danville at Highway 36
  • S Danville at Highway 157
  • New Cut Rd.
  • S Johnson Chapel at Tanner Rd.
  • N Johns Rd.
Also, parts of Kirby Bridge Rd., Vaughn Bridge Rd., Forrest Chapel Rd., and Friendship Church Rd. in Morgan County are impassable.

The Morgan-Lawrence Counties chapter of the Red Cross has opened a shelter in Decatur for those displaced by the high water. It is located in Fort Decatur at 610 4th Avenue SE.
