PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Divers searched the Columbia River after a car crashed down an embankment into the water Friday morning.

Hours after the 2 a.m. crash, police found a man involved in the crash alive on the back side of a boathouse. It wasn't immediately clear whether he was seriously hurt.

Portland police said they first got word of the wreck in the 500 block of North Bridgeton Road from a 911 caller at Blue Frog Landing. She told police she didn't have a description of the car, but that it was totally submerged in he river.

Other witnesses said they heard the crash.

"I was just sleeping in my bed and I heard a crash and thought they went over the embankment," said John Kempa, who lives nearby. "All the cops and ambulance got here pretty quick and down below there was a guy. He's alive down there and he won't come out."

Firefighters, a sheriff's office dive team and police searched the area and worked to recover the car.

By 7 a.m., crews had pulled the car out of the river.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the police non-emergency line at (503) 823-3333.
