SOUTH HADLEY, MA (WSHM) -

After having no luck overnight, rescue crews returned to the Connecticut River in the area of Cove Island Road on Sunday morning to try and recover the body of a 5-year-old girl.

Massachusetts State Police, South Hadley Police and Fire, as well as Massachusetts Environmental Police all took part in the effort.

Late Sunday night, the Northwestern District Attorney's Office said the search for the girl had yet to turn up anything.

They said she was the youngest member of a family visiting from California.  They had gathered at the Cove Island Road residence to watch a local fireworks display.

The girl fell in a space between the end of the dock at the residence and a boat.

The DA's office said it appears to be a tragic accident with no foul play.

One resident who has lived in South Hadley for the last 26 years told CBS 3 that the river always poses a threat.

"Everybody is very concerned about the current coming down," said Gail Hutchinson. "The logs coming down the river. Very frightened and scared for a lot of people who are going out on the river in their light crafts."

Hutchinson has a son who uses the river for kayaking when he is in town.

While he is no longer a young child, she said right now, she would even urge him to stay out of the water.

"There is a public ramp down here, in back of these units that everybody uses," Hutchinson stated. "So he would always take his kayak out. This time of year, he's in his 20s, I would hope he would be able to realize even that even with experienced boaters, there's a danger here."
