Deputy Assistant Secretary for Rural Outreach John White and Director of Green Strides and U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Andrea Falken will join Superintendent of Talladega County Schools Dr. Suzanne Lacey to visit U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools within District Sustainability Awardee Talladega County at 1:30 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, July 10th in Talladega, Alabama.  They will be joined by Superintendent of Alabama State Department of Education Dr. Thomas R. Bice at 9:00 am on Thursday, July 11th.

The visit is the first leg of the Department's ‘Education Built to Last' Facilities Best Practices Tour and will spotlight best practices in school building and grounds design, construction, operations and management to support health, equity, educational outcomes, energy efficiency and cost savings in our nation's schools.

The tour will include examples of student projects, building management practices, and outdoor learning environments at Fayetteville High School, Winterboro High School, Munford Elementary School, Munford Middle School and Munford High School.  All state and district facilities personnel from the region are invited to attend the building facilities discussion portion of the event on July 11th at 12:30, which will allow facilities experts from around the region to share best practices on school facilities.

The ED-Green Ribbon Schools and District Sustainability Awardees are recognized for reducing their environmental impact, including energy use, waste and water; creating healthy learning environments and fostering wellness practices; and providing effective environmental education that prepares students to succeed in the 21st century, including STEM, green careers, and civics. BACKGROUND ON SCHOOL AWARDEES:

2013 Awardee - Fayetteville High School's environment project includes large, raised garden beds and a wetland area and offers hands-on elements such as fishing and studying life in a nearby river and an extensive recycling program. Fayetteville High School's walls are filled with students' work revealing researched, detailed studies of biomes, plant life and chemical effects on the environment.

2012 Awardee - Winterboro High School students are prepared for their future through project-based learning which is heavy in real life science, technology, and math applications. Students are engaged in projects that involve problem solving activities related to environmentally friendly structures, greenhouse related science, and the value of healthy lifestyles.

2012 Awardee – Munford Elementary is the first school in the southeast modeled after a forest and integrates forestry, conservation, and environmental education themes throughout the curriculum. Through "theme immersion," daily instruction uses the physical design and interactive exhibits to convey environmental elements.

2013 Awardee - Munford Middle School and Munford High School have challenged their students with authentic learning experiences involving greenhouses, fish tanks and hands-on elements such as the walking path, outdoor classrooms, and reading pavilions in addition to an active waterfall. Since both schools share one building, they were nominated as one school, per the GRS requirements.

Munford Middle School and Munford High School also offer additional math and science studies innovatively and integrate technology tools for students, helping to increase math and science scores on standardized tests and daily attendance rates.
