MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Commuters along Interstate 65 through Autauga County have probably noticed that directional signs are starting to appear in doubles, causing many to scratch their heads in wonder.

Are their tax dollars being wasted on an unnecessary change? ALDOT says "no".

In most cases the sign that is going up looks exactly like the sign it's set to replace, but that's not the case, according to the Alabama Department of Transportation.

Officials say the state's 6th Division is undergoing what is called an interstate sign rehabilitation project that is clearing many of the older exit signs.

ALDOT spokeswoman Rebecca Leigh White says the signs are being replaced with newer signs that have better reflectivity qualities, aiding drivers' ability to read them, especially late at night

It is possible for older signs to lose their reflective properties, and since the signs must meet federal highway guidelines, the project aims to upgrade them.

Sings from mile markers between 105 and 198 are receiving the upgrades, which are being paid for through federal money as part of the state's interstate maintenance program.

The total cost of the upgrade is contracted at $2,192,735.

Once the new signs are in place, the old signs will be removed.
