U.S. Marshals didn't have far to search for missing Montgomery County escapee Randy Earl Washington - but they didn't know that. Washington was just located in the most unlikely of places - booked into the Montgomery City Jail under an alias.
Washington was ten months into a year-long sentence on a misdemeanor attempting to elude charge out of Montgomery County when he was mistakenly assigned trustee status and allowed to go out on a work detail. Washington walked off of that work detail near Day Street and Terminal Road back in May and has been considered an armed and dangerous escapee ever since.
The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office says Washington is now back in custody after he was found...in custody.
Washington was behind bars in the Montgomery City Jail where he had been booked under an alias after police were unable to verify his fingerprints. The city jail is just one mile away from where Washington should have been in custody at the Montgomery County Detention Facility.
The Montgomery Police Department says Washington provided a false name to officers questioning him - he was then arrested on multiple capias warrants linked to the false identity he provided. When he was booked he claimed to have a physical injury that prevented him from being fingerprinted which would have established his true identity.
U.S. Marshals reviewing jail photos recognized Washington's photograph and made the connection to the missing MCSO inmate.
Sheriff's Office officials told WSFA 12 News back in May that due to a clerical error, Washington was placed on trustee status despite a hold on him out of Bibb County related to a 2010 incident where court records show he was charged with attempted murder, reckless endangerment, and criminal mischief third degree.
Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Derrick Cunningham confirms Washington, 42, was returned to the county detention facility by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force on July 10. He has been charged with second-degree escape, attempting to elude and felon carrying a weapon.
