MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
The Alabama Department of Transportation says, weather permitting, motorists traveling on I-85 South at mile marker14.5 may experience intermittent lane closures and stoppages beginning Sunday, July 14 through Thursday, July 18.
The delays will be due to workers' setting steel ramp girders as part of the Montgomery Outer Loop project. The lane closures and stoppages will occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, for the following two weeks.
Additionally, traffic may be stopped for approximately 15-20 minutes while girders are set and stabilized directly over lanes. During a stoppage, the I-85 southbound entrance ramp at Exit 16 (Waugh) will be closed. Motorists needing to travel from State Route 126 to I-85 South are encouraged to follow State Route 126 South to Exit 11 (Mitylene).
Motorists should anticipate these types of closures throughout the summer and are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. For ALDOT Road Conditions information, visit www.dot.state.al.us.
This construction is part of the ongoing Montgomery Outer Loop project to build an extension from I-85 to State Route 110 (Vaughn Road). Under a $66 million contract awarded by the Alabama Department of Transportation, Bessemer-based R.R. Dawson Bridge Co. is realigning portions of U.S. Highway 80 and State Route 126, making ramp changes at the Waugh Exit on I-85, and building a series of overpasses and bridges. The project is scheduled for completion in December 2014.
An additional project, expected to begin at the conclusion of this project, will pave the roadway between I-85 and Vaughn Road before the route is opened to traffic.
