NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A south Nashville man tried to put out a massive fire that swept through his home late Thursday night, but it quickly grew out of control.

The fire started around 10 p.m. on Townes Drive.

A neighbor took cell phone video of the flames and says the fire started in the basement.

The home was fully engulfed by the time emergency crews arrived.

"Our basement and our garage are gone. The upstairs area will have some smoke damage. There's going to be a lot of damage in the living room," said homeowner Michael Purvis.

Investigators are still determining the cause.
