Department of corrections probing claims of abuse

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Department of Corrections officials say they're investigating about 10 cases of alleged abuse against prison inmates.

A report by the Equal Justice Initiative that was recently released outlines alleged abuse of inmates at a facility in Elmore County and alleged sexual abuse of inmates in Bibb and Donaldson counties.

Department of Corrections Commissioner Kim Thomas says two cases involving alleged sexual abuse of inmates in Bibb and Donaldson counties have been turned over to district attorneys for prosecution after forensic tests were performed.

EJI Director Bryan Stevenson tells AL.com (http://bit.ly/18hPLy3 ) the investigations and prosecutions are encouraging.

The report comes after former Alabama Department of Corrections officers pleaded guilty in the 2010 beating death of inmate Rocrast Mack at the Ventress Correctional Facility in Barbour County.
