KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police have one man in custody following an early morning standoff at a motel in the south part of the city.

It started shortly before 3 a.m. Monday when police went to the A-1 Motel located on East 87th Street just east of Interstate 435 on a disturbance call.

When officers arrived, they found a man on a second-floor balcony who was possibly armed with a knife.  Police said the man was emotionally disturbed and may have been drunk.

The man told police if they came closer he would kill himself.

Officers tried to negotiate with the man, but that failed, so a tactical unit was called to the scene about 4:15 a.m.

The man, said to be in his late 30s to early 40s, was taken into custody shortly before 5:30 a.m. after police set off several flash-bang distractive devices. He was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated.

No one was injured in the incident.

The lobby of the motel was evacuated during the incident, but people staying at the motel were told to just stay in their rooms. Police are still trying to find a weapon.
