Groups protest Zimmerman verdict in Birmingham

Posted: Updated:
BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Some of those who disagreed with the George Zimmerman verdict protested in Birmingham at noon on Monday at a rally at Kelly Ingram Park.

Local civil rights groups are calling it the "Missing Trayvon Martin Rally." It is sponsored by the NAACP, the National Action Network and the Civil Rights Activist Committee.

Around 100 to 150 people were in attendance shortly after noon and organizers say more are expected. Protesters expressed they want the rally to be peaceful. Around five Birmingham police officers were on the scene during the rally.

Local leaders announced plans for the rally Sunday at Kelly Ingram Park. Some of them wore hoodies in support of Martin's family. They believe George Zimmerman should have been convicted of killing Martin. They say the rally is a way of peacefully protesting the verdict.
