Battle of the Badges blood drive set for Friday at LP Field

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

There's a heated competition among the men and women who wear a uniform and badge in Davidson County, and the community stands to benefit.

Metro police, the Nashville Fire Department and the Davidson County Sheriff's Office participate each year in the Battle of the Badges, as each agency competes to see which can donate the most blood to the American Red Cross.

Despite some friendly smack talk at the kickoff announcement Monday, each department stressed the real purpose of the event.

"We're all in the same boat. We're all for public service and public safety. I really don't care who wins as long as we get a heck of a lot more blood this year than we got last year," said Nashville Fire Assistant Chief Rick White.

This year's Battle of the Badges couldn't come at a better time, as the Red Cross' blood supply is extremely low.

The event is set for Friday at LP Field from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

When you give blood, you get to designate which "badge" you want your donation to count toward.
