Company offers help for gun owners shooting in self-defense

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Keeping your family and property safe is important. Now, there's new protection for gun owners who are forced to fire in self-defense.

A company called Second Defense Alliance promises help for those who become victims of a home invasion.

For a small monthly fee, the company will pay for legal support, cleanup and even counseling for gun owners who shoot a home invasion suspect in self-defense. One of the company's top leaders says it also buys peace of mind.

"Things are happening very quickly. There's a lot of adrenaline. You have to be very careful what you say. The 911 call and the things you say immediately will be held against you if anything would happen to go wrong in protecting yourself," said Tim Brennan, with Second Defense Alliance. "We tell our members we will be there within 24 hours ourselves to start facilitating the process."

Close to a dozen prosecutors, gun owners and shooting range operators we spoke with in Nashville on Monday had not heard of the company.

"I think there's a lot of interest in gun owners in having some type of protection - particularly financially - in the event they're involved in a shooting, because homeowner's insurance will not cover it generally as a rule," said John Harris, who runs the Tennessee Firearms Association.

But as good as it sounds, Harris suggested interested gun owners read the fine print.

"It was very narrowly defined," he said. "People who are out there carrying guns, particularly the permit holders, they're just as likely - if not more likely - to get into a situation involving self-defense, like [George] Zimmerman, where it's out in public and not necessarily in their home."

So far, the Second Defense Alliance has about 2,000 members, including several dozen in Tennessee.

At this point, though, it has not yet had a member need to take advantage of its services.
