LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -

A Topeka woman is accused of fatally shooting a 51-year-old Lawrence man.

Gary B. Edens was killed about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at a home near West Seventh and Michigan streets. Neighbors said the victim lived at the duplex with his wife and kids.

Brittny Marie Adams was charged with second-degree murder Friday afternoon. Jonathan Randall Rush of Wichita was charged with aggravated assault, a felon in possession of a firearm and obstructing justice.

Court documents have not revealed a motive. Adams and Rush were arrested in Topeka.

Alex Hormell, a neighbor who lives next door to where the shooting happened, describes the scene as surreal.

He said he didn't hear the actual shooting, but he did hear a lot of commotion in the aftermath.

"I just heard a lot of screaming and yelling, so I ran around the corner, and I saw him laying there. I heard his son screaming about why isn't the ambulance here," Hormell said.

That is when Hormell went to work, trying to save his neighbor's life.

"I ran over and did CPR as best I could. The officers said there was a pulse and to stop, and then the pulse stopped. I did CPR again," he said.

Paramedics then arrived and took the victim away. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police sealed off the scene looking for clues in this case. Hormell lamented the loss of his neighbor.

"They seemed like a very, very close-knit family, very tight family, very nice guy," Hormell said.
