MT. CHARLESTON, NV (FOX5) -

Some of the trails in the Spring Mountains that were closed because of the Carpenter 1 wildfire were reopened Friday.

Firefighters have begun winding down their efforts to battle the wildfire that has consumed nearly 28,000 acres of forest near Mt. Charleston since a lightning strike started the blaze July 1. About 120 firefighters remain in the rugged terrain to put out the fire, which was 95 percent contained by Friday afternoon.

In addition to the evacuation of hundreds of residents because of the fire, officials were forced to close a majority of the popular hiking trails.

Sky Siber, of the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, said some of the trails were reopened Friday morning when public access to the mountain range was allowed.

Siber said the Bristlecone, Robbers Roost, Telephone Canyon, Fletcher Canyon and Mary Jane Falls trails were reopened Friday. He said the Trail Canyon trail was also reopened to Highway 158 and the North Loop trail was reopened to the junction with Trail Canyon.

Several recreation sites have also reopened, Siber said. He said the public can again visit the picnic areas at Cathedral Rock, Deer Creek, Sawmill and Lee Meadows. Hilltop Campground and the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort are open for camping, he said. He said Fletcher View can only be visited during the day.

Anyone who enters a closed trail can be punished with fines of up to $5,000, up to six months in jail or both, Siber said.

Forecasters are warning of heavy rain in the Spring Mountains this weekend. Officials said that because of the fire, heavy rain could cause debris flows and flash flooding.
