Committee recommends changes to grading policies

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A committee has recommended changes to the Montgomery Public Schools' Grade Promotion and Retention Handbook, including the removal of Read Well® as the primary curriculum for first grade reading students.

The committee presented the recommendations to the Montgomery County School Board this week. WSFA 12 News first reported in June concerns about student performance prompted the removal of Read Well® program as the primary reading curriculum during the last nine weeks of the school year.

It plays a prominent role in the handbook, and one report found Read Well® being used as early as 2003.

The changes are part of what Superintendent Barbara Thompson calls "a thorough overhaul" of procedures in regard to grading policies in MPS. If approved, the changes would go into effect for the upcoming school year.
