NORTHAMPTON, MA (WSHM) -

Almost three dozen people are displaced following a two-alarm fire in Northampton Monday afternoon.

The fire started at the Meadowbrook Apartment complex around 1 p.m. Four animals were killed and one person suffered minor injuries.

"It just happened in a matter of seconds," said one resident of the complex, Cindy Kletcka.

Fire crews responded to the scene within minutes.

"For my wife and my daughter, they are pretty shook up," said Michael Kletcka. "But me being in the Marine Corps and all that, you just got to think levelheaded about what's important and what isn't important."

Fire officials say they managed to rescue several pets from the apartment complex after the fire was knocked out and everyone was evacuated.

"We've taken out chickens, rabbits, a couple of birds," said Northampton Fire Chief Brian Duggan.

Many residents say they're thankful they made it out before the flames engulfed the building.

"I was just in my house, I was taking a nap. I thought the fire alarm was fake. We have fake fire alarms all the time so I was just going to keep sleeping, then I go downstairs and there's smoke everywhere," said Khali Benjamin.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

"Investigation is currently active between the state fire marshal's office the Northampton police and the Northampton Fire Department," said Duggan.

It's estimated that the fire caused around a half-million dollars in damage.

The Red Cross is assisting the victims.
