Diabetes Camp: 'It's a lot of fun and you're not the only one'

Some East Texas children at a diabetes summer camp say they are having fun, learning a lot and feel safe and comfortable.

The East Texas Medical Center diabetes summer camp is for children between the ages of 7 and 13 years old.

It is specifically for kids with diabetes to enjoy summer camp activities while being in a controlled environment.

"I've had diabetes since I was three and I've been going to camp for three years," said Cody Twomey, a camper at the diabetes camp.

This camp is exclusive for children with type one diabetes, which makes kids like Ginger Garred feel comfortable.

"It's awesome and fun and there's a whole lot of other kids that have diabetes here and so you're not the only one. You play a lot of fun games and you swim and do exercise. It's just really fun," said Ginger, a camper at the diabetes camp.

While having fun is key, it's also a time for learning too.

"With type one diabetes it's very important that these children learn how to regulate both exercise and their blood sugars and to make sure they don't get in danger of getting too low or too high," said Mary Haislet, a certified diabetes educator at ETMC.

With the nursing staff keeping a close eye on them, the children are able to exercise and enjoy themselves.

"They go in the room where we check our blood sugar and then write it down and they help us decide how much insulin we take and it just makes you comfortable," said Ginger.

"We talk about the foods that they're eating, the amount of insulin that they're getting per gram of carb. For every so many grams of carbohydrates they give one unit of insulin," said Haislet.

At this camp, all kids are the same.

"We have a couple kids here, their peers have made fun of them for being diabetic so here no body is passing judgement on them. They are just able to be themselves and that's all we're asking them to do," said Haislet.

The camp will continue through out the week.

Many of the campers participate in the Tyler Type One Diabetes Support Group.
