PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A driver who almost hit an Arizona Department of Public Safety patrol vehicle was arrested after he intentionally crashed his vehicle and fled.

The suspect, whose name was not released, almost struck a DPS unit in the median of Interstate 17, near milepost 232, officers said.

DPS and Yavapai County Sheriff's deputies tried to stop the fleeing motorist.

Officers deployed spike strips and the driver purposely crashed into vegetation off the roadway.

During negotiations, the driver refused to give up and fled on foot.

The suspect was apprehended a short time later and arrested.
