New Alabama gun law in effect August 1

(WTVM) -

Alabama's new gun law takes effect August 1. It will include some significant changes for business owners, and law enforcement wants to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Under the law, businesses cannot prohibit their employees from having firearms in their cars while at work. However, in order to have them on company grounds, employees must now have a license to carry a concealed weapon.

"Under the new law you will be able to transfer a handgun in a vehicle as long as it is unloaded and it is secured in a container that is inaccessible to anyone in the passenger compartment," said Lee County Sheriff, Jay Jones.

Also, a permit has become easier to obtain. Sheriffs now have less discretion over the issuance of concealed weapons permits and must issue a written justification for denying a one.

"It changes the current status of where sheriffs 'may' issue a permit to 'shall' issue a permit, unless there is a specific, legitimate reason by law that would prevent a person from being able to possess a pistol," states Jones.

We caught up with an Alabama Gun Rights activist Wednesday at a gun safety course in Auburn who doesn't believe in the new law is a hindrance to public safety as long as people are responsible.

"We encourage responsible carry, obviously with letting people taking training classes and stuff like that, but whether you carry concealed or openly, with the way things are today, make it a point to be able to defend yourself," explains Jimmy Allen, Chambers County Coordinator for Alabama Gun Rights.

Jones says all entities in Lee County will continue to work closely making sure the law is clear to all citizens.

"We are working together, the chiefs here in the Auburn and Opelika area to make sure we have uniformity of application of the law, which we would want to do regardless of what type of law it is of course, but being the fact that it does involve firearms certainly we all want to be on the same page."
