BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has placed the Birmingham School System on probation, according to Birmingham school officials.

In a press conference on Thursday, the Birmingham School Board President, April Williams, says the schools are still accredited, but states the probation is a serious matter. She says the board plans to implement all SACS recommendations.

A review team was in Birmingham May 13 through May 15. The report cited board micromanagement as a problem in the school system among others. To rectify this, board members will have to undergo professional development and must align their strategic plan with AdvancEd, the company that provides accreditation. The board will also be subject to monitoring by AdvancED.

Birmingham Superintendent Craig Witherspoon says they have already implemented some of the recommendations.

"There has been training that the board has gone through. The board has adopted a set of goals, a set of operating procedures," said Witherspoon.

The Birmingham School System will be on probation for at least 6 months. Another review of the system will take place on February 15, 2014.
