Proposals address pollution at Navajo coal plant

PAGE, AZ (AP) -

A group that includes the Navajo Generating Station's operator is offering an alternative to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's proposal to require installation of technology to reduce haze-causing emissions from the plant on the Navajo Nation.

The alternative submitted Friday by the Salt River Project, environmental groups and tribal and federal officials would shut down one of the plant's three units, cutting pollution beyond what the EPA has proposed.

The EPA's proposal gives the plant 10 years to install technology improving visibility at places like the Grand Canyon.

The SRP says the alternative takes into account potential ownership changes and pushes back implementation of expensive pollution controls.

It also sets a firm deadline for shutting down the plant by 2044, unless the Navajo Nation opts to run it itself.
