CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -
Did you get stuck in traffic on northbound Interstate 71/75 on Saturday?
For many hours on Saturday, traffic was backed up from Florence up into Cincinnati due to some road work. The nature and timing of the road work wasn't shared with the public or the media so there were a lot of questions.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the back up was due to the installation of six traffic loops in Kenton County.
KYTC says the goal of the traffic loops is collect data to understand the flow of traffic in the congested county.
While the loops are being installed, traffic flow has to be reduced down to one lane.
KYTC says the original plan was to install these overnight and have all lanes back open by 4:00 a.m. on Saturday but rain delayed their efforts.
Once the work is started, it has to be completed before lanes can be opened, one at a time.
The transportation cabinet apologized via a press release for the inconvenience. They say they are taking steps to ensure it doesn't happen again.
