Hampden Co. 4-H holds 60th annual Youth Fair

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -

Hundreds of agriculture enthusiasts made their way to the Eastern States Exposition Center on Saturday to take part in the 60th annual Hampden County 4-H and Youth Fair.

There was plenty to see and do inside the Mallary Complex, with everything from chickens and roosters on display, to competitions for goats and cows.

There was even the veggie car races, where kids got to put wheels on their favorite piece of squash or zucchini and see who made it down the ramp the fastest.

For organizers and participants, the event is highly anticipated every year.

"It teaches you a lot of life skills," said Nick Turnberg, from East Longmeadow. "Through 4-H, we do a lot of different things. Public speaking, community service, and the livestock you see here today."

"This is one of the big highlights of the 4-H year here in Hampden County," said Fair Association President John Buddington. "This is also kind of a prelude to the Big E. For certain animal classes, they do have to exhibit here and then they can go on to the New England 4-H Fair."

The Hampden County 4-H Fair also had a horse show that was held at the other end of the Big E complex.
