AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

In conjunction with the Sales Tax Holiday Weekend and Auburn University's semester break, downtown parking will be meter-free.

Free parking will last from August 2 through August 20.

Auburn officials are encouraging citizens to do their back-to-school shopping, as well as dine and enjoy downtown Auburn to keep dollars local, and have free parking as an added bonus.

"It's all in the hope people will shop Auburn as they go back to school. No sales tax, but it still helps our local economy and our local vendors," explains David Dorton, Public Affairs Director for the City of Auburn.

The tax holiday weekend begins Friday, August 2 at 12:01 a.m. and ends on Sunday, August 4 at midnight.

Items exempt from state and city sales tax fall into 3 major categories:

  • Clothes
  • Computers and computer supplies
  • School supplies under $50

For more information visit the city's website to find an all-inclusive list of taxable and tax-exempt items.
