ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The Georgia World Congress Center Authority has stopped negotiations with Mt. Vernon Baptist Church over building the new Atlanta Falcons Stadium.

The church rejected the $6.2 million offer.

A spokesman for Friendship Baptist Church said late Thursday evening that representatives from the church had been negotiating for most of the day.

Earlier this week, GWCCA decided to start looking into the feasibility of building a new Georgia Dome in another location.

Both Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and Friendship Baptist Church have land that were part of a plan to the build the Georgia Dome on what planners called the "south site." But GWCCA started looking into building on the "north site" near Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard at Northside Drive.

For Falcons fan William Horton, one of the drawbacks of this site is how far it would put fans from the nearest MARTA station, which is the Vine City stop. That could force fans who want to take MARTA to Falcons games to travel or take a shuttle bus nearly a mile away. It's something William Horton already does for another Atlanta team he supports: the Braves.

"For Braves games, it's not that bad because it's right along here, but I know the Georgia Dome is a lot farther, so if they're trying to build near that, it's going to be a long walk," Horton said.

Vine City homeowners, like Margaret Horton, are also not thrilled that the GWCCA could be shifting focus to the north site - which would put the new Georgia Dome right by her house.

"It really worries me, because I feel like it's going to further isolate our neighborhood from the downtown area, which could bring more crime," Margaret Horton said.

For now, GWCCA is working to assess the north site.
