Vehicle rushing gunshot victim to hospital crashes into police car

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A crash involving a police car on Wynnton Rd. was caused by a vehicle on its way to the hospital.

Friends of Marquis Townsend, 20, raced him to the Medical Center in lieu of waiting for an ambulance after he was shot in the face.

Townsend told police an unknown assailant shot him near the basketball courts of the Fluellen Community Center on 8th Street just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

He suffered a gunshot wound to the right cheek and is now in stable condition.

"This community center is here for kids and adults alike, and this is supposed to be a place of refuge, a place of peace, for not only this community, but for everyone in the city. So when you have senseless acts of violence that happen right here on your property, it's disheartening, and it also makes people a little more hesitant about coming to the community center," said director, Shay Terrell.

The crash occurred less than a mile from the shooting scene when the car carrying Townsend ran a red light crossing Wynnton at Brown Avenue. The driver struck a white van which in turn struck a police car.

The police officer in Wednesday's crash was not seriously injured, but it is the second accident in two days to involve a police car in Columbus.

The first crash occurred Tuesday on Veterans Parkway and resulted in the death of Cpl. Keith Slay and the critical injury of Agent Brad Evans.
