PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Saturday is a big day for Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, as it marks the 20th anniversary of Tent City.

In August 1993, Arpaio started the nation's largest Tent City for convicted inmates, as a solution to overcrowding jails, he said.

As many as 2,000 inmates spend days and nights in the canvas incarceration compound, rain or shine, and in temperatures ranging from 20 degrees to more than 120 degrees.

Arpaio bans coffee, cigarettes and televisions in Tent City, but inmates will get to watch a movie Saturday.
