ST. MATTHEWS, KY (WAVE) - A brazen thief who police believe is stealing from purses was caught on camera moments after the alleged crime. Now, St. Matthews police have a word of caution and advice so you're not targeted.

An alleged thief swipes a wallet while roaming an office building. Hours later, police say he went on a shopping spree racking up hundreds of dollars

Sgt. Charlie Portman of the St. Matthews Police Department believes the man is stealing from purses out in the open. Portman said they don't think it's his first time and the man had no problem scoping out three stories of the building.

In surveillance video, the man appeared calm and collected before making off with a woman's wallet from the Greater Louisville Association of Realtors building in the 6300 block of Dutchmans Lane.

Looking at the video, Portman said the man "acts like he belongs there."

St. Matthews police released surveillance video hoping someone will recognize the man before it happens again. He was last seen in a late 90s Dodge truck.

"It's silver on the side, black on the top, damage to driver's side and to the front passenger side," said Portman.

Detectives spotted the vehicle at Central Avenue and Taylor Boulevard the same day police allege he shopped at an area Kroger and gas station.

"I'm sure there's going to be multiple victims out there once we determine who this individual is," Portman said.

Police say the man in captured in surveillance video could face charges for 3rd degree burglary and credit card fraud, if convicted.
