HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Huntsville man risked his life to rescue a cat from an overpass Sunday, and ended up having to be rescued himself.

The man and his friends heard the kitten crying and realized that it was stuck. They have made several attempts to get it down from the 565 overpass near downtown Huntsville, but have had no luck.

After three days of unsuccessful tries, the man decided he would brave the heights to save the cat. Using a garden hose as a makeshift rope, he lowered himself over the side of the overpass.

That's when his friends said things went wrong. The frightened kitten darted out of reach. The man realized the hose was tied too tightly around him, and he had no way to loosen it or to climb back up. He dangled from the bridge near the Memorial Parkway interchange for nearly 20 minutes before firefighters came to his rescue.

The man was brought safely down, but the cat remained stuck, and the men were not happy about it.

"They already had a ladder that would reach up there," said Rex Manley. "They could have come up. We called them. We are worried about that cat. The little thing needs some water and food right now."

The man who attempted to save the kitten broke several ribs and lacerations from the garden hose, but will be okay. The cat was beyond the reach of firefighters throughout the rescue.

Witnesses in the area said the cat was rescued later Sunday night, but didn't know who rescued the animal.
