TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

For years, Mobile Meals of Toledo has been delivering hot food to area residents, helping them to maintain their independence and improving their quality of life. The nonprofit took it a step further last month, providing free pet food to clients with pets.

Carolyn Fox, with Mobile Meals of Toledo, says they serve a lot of elderly people, and for a lot of their clients, financial issues force them to make tough decisions.

"T
hey have to make a decision: Do they get food, or do they get their prescriptions? So, knowing that someone's helping to feed their animals, which they dearly love, eases their burden a little bit, and we try to give them enough food to last them a couple months," said Fox.

Fox says 101 Mobile Meals clients requested extra help for their pets. So the organization delivered about 2,700 pounds of pet food to feed 98 dogs, 95 cats, 10 birds, 1 fish and 1 guinea pig in July.

They are able to provide this service twice a year through fundraising efforts, grants and private donations.

Mobile Meals of Toledo regularly delivers hot meals to more than 600 clients throughout the Toledo area, totaling more than 532,000 meals annually.
