Man falls to his death at Turner Field

Ronald Homer Ronald Homer
ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Atlanta police still can't say how an Atlanta Braves fan fell 65 feet from the upper level of Turner Field to his death.

According to the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office, the man who died in the fall was Ronald Homer, 30, of Conyers.

The game against Philadelphia was delayed two hours because of rain, and Homer fell just before 9 p.m. as play resumed.

Homer fell near a back parking lot area where the players park and enter by Hank Aaron Drive and Bill Lucas Drive.

Four witnesses said Homer fell from the fourth level deck and no one else was around him.

Turner Field released a brief statement confirming that a "spectator fell from the upper level. Atlanta police is handling the investigation."

Investigators said that it is too soon to tell if alcohol was involved.

"It's something that the medical examiner's office will be checking into," said Atlanta police spokesman John Chefee.

They said based on information from witnesses, police don't suspect foul play.

Jimmy McFall and his family were on their way to buy tickets for Saturday night's Atlanta Braves game when they learned about Homer death.

"I think it is tragic, a tragic thing to happen for him and for family," said McFall.

The incident surprised some long-time Braves fans.

"I have been to the stadium here several times and I used to come quite a bit last year, and they got a real good safety record here and it looks real safe all around the stadium," said McFall.

"I am children's director at my church and I've just brought a large group of children in here not long ago, so no, I never would have thought about that," said Christie Renfroe.

Monday night's accident is not the first time someone has fallen to their death at Turner Field. In 2008 a Cumming, GA, man fell from the upper deck. McFall said the Braves and the city need to take a closer look at what is going on at the stadium.

"Unfortunately if someone fell that far, then they need to take a look at it. If someone can get over and fall that far, then they need to increase the size of the railing a little bit more," said McFall.

 Atlanta Braves Statement:

The Atlanta Braves extend our sincerest and heartfelt condolences to Mr. Homer's family and friends.  We are saddened by this tragic incident and will continue our investigation along with the Atlanta Police Department.  We will have no further comment until the investigation is complete.

The Atlanta Braves will observe a moment of silence for Mr. Homer before tonight's game.
