MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

The Montgomery County Health Department is confirming a second case of Tuberculosis in connection with Robert E. Lee High School.

Health Dept. spokeswoman Pam Fortner says the student who contracted TB had been in close contact with the initial student who tested positive in June.

Fortner says the second student was confirmed positive with an active case of TB on August 14.

The Montgomery County Health Department is now in the process of sending out letters to parents and students alerting them to the positive test. The letters will be mailed to those who are known to have had close contact to the second student.

As of Friday, there are still 29 people who were notified of the first TB case that have yet to be tested. The health department says it has been unable to locate those students over the summer but says it will try again once school starts.

Students who receive the letters must be treated in the first week of class. The Alabama Department of Public Health adds that those students will be allowed to make up any missed school work and will be given an excused absence to leave school for testing.

Tuberculosis is treatable and preventable. Authorities say those who may have been infected can prevent the disease from becoming active IF they know that they've been infected.
