Tropical Storm Pewa maintained its 65 mile per hour winds as it approached the International Date Line far west of Hawaii, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said.
Forecasters said as of 5 p.m. Saturday, Pewa was located 1,510 miles west-southeast of Lihue, 1,065 miles east-southeast of Wake Island and about 700 miles east-northeast of Majuro Atoll. It was moving west at 13 miles per hour.
The current forecast indicates that Pewa may strengthen into a typhoon sometime late Sunday or early Monday.
Pewa is expected to cross the International Date line Saturday evening. When it does, it will be monitored by forecasters at the Japan Meterological Agency's Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) in Tokyo.
