MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Law enforcement reports several cases of counterfeit money circulating around the area. In some cases, it can be hard to tell what's real and what's not.

Experts say counterfeiters like to strike during busy shopping seasons like back to school time or the holiday season.

"People are busy and there's a long line, and it's harder for them to look at the bill, check the bill to make sure it's genuine," said Clayton Slay, Resident Agent in Charge for the Montgomery Resident Office of the U.S. Secret Service.

Slay advises consumers and businesses to double check all denominations from $5 to $100 bills. More information on how to detect a fake bill can be found here. These are tips passed along by the U.S. Secret Service:

If You Receive a Counterfeit

  • Do not return it to the passer.
  • Delay the passer if possible.
  • Observe the passer's description, as well as that of any companions, and the license plate numbers of any vehicles used.
  • Contact your local police department or United States Secret Service field office.
  • Write your initials and the date in the white border areas of the suspect note.
  • Limit the handling of the note. Carefully place it in a protective covering, such as an envelope.

Surrender the note or coin only to a properly identified police officer or a U.S. Secret Service special agent.
