BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Investigators are awaiting drug test results for a youth evangelist accused of impersonating a peace officer. The drug test was ordered as standard procedure when Matt Pitt was transferred to the Shelby County Jail on Wednesday morning.

Birmingham police officers took Pitt into custody on Tuesday night and then turned him over to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. He was wanted in Jefferson County on a charge of impersonating a peace officer, the same charge he faced in 2012 in Shelby County. Sheriff's officials say it is a serious charge.

"The public has to be able to trust, when they're talking to someone that presents them self as a law enforcement officer, is that's what they are. We depend on that for law enforcement to operate effectively," said Jefferson County Chief Deputy Randy Christian.

Pitt was booked into the Jefferson County jail and bonded out. He was then transferred to the Shelby County Jail since his probation for his 2012 conviction was revoked. Pitt is still in custody in Shelby County.

Authorities said today it's quite likely Matt Pitt will serve some jail time as a result of not only this latest case, but also violating the probation of his previous 2012 case.

Christian says their warrant detail had been trying to track Pitt down yesterday after it became obvious he was not going to turn himself in.

"We got information that he was in town and it became apparent to us he was not going to surrender. And so like any other wanted felon, we start searching for him, that's our job," Christian said.

Around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night, they got a tip that Pitt was in the Vulcan Park area. Birmingham police officers rushed to the area with deputies just behind.

Christian says when Pitt saw officers, he bailed out the car he was in and began to run. Officers gave chase and eventually caught up to him.

Christian said Pitt struggled with officers, but was eventually brought under control.

FOX6 News asked Christian about who tipped off authorities to Pitts' location.

"I've got to think that came from someone who recognized, number one, where he was going to be and I think they had to recognize he needed help. I think it came from someone who cared about him and we appreciate that," Chief Deputy Christian said.

Chief Deputy Christian stressed that the measures that were taken to find Pitt and eventually arrest him are nothing out of the ordinary.

In fact, he said, with public figures, the majority of the time they allow those folks a chance to turn themselves in and 99.9 percent of the time, they do.

But when it seemed like Pitt was not going to surrender, they felt it was time to take greater measures to arrest him.

FOX6News went by The Basement headquarters on Wednesday to see if there was anyone there who wanted to speak on Pitt's behalf, however there was no one at that location.
