PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A driver is in police custody after leading officers on a high-speed chase in Phoenix on Friday afternoon.

DPS said an officer was attempting to stop a 1997 Chevy Van on Arizona State Route 51 about 4 p.m. when the van tried to ram one of the officers, and the chase began.

The pursuit went south on SR 51 to eastbound Interstate 10. The vehicle went onto Interstate 17 until it exited around the Durango curve, according to DPS.

The Phoenix Police Department's helicopter unit was overhead during the pursuit.

The driver bailed out of the vehicle near 39th Avenue and Sherman, and was caught after a short foot chase near 40th Avenue and Sherman.
