Most students in Springfield returned to school Monday; however, students at five schools in the area are going to spend more time in class than others. The five schools are part of the Forward 5 program meant to help students at struggling schools.
Harvard University's Education Innovation Laboratory came up with several strategies to give students an extra boost. The school day was extended 45 minutes to allow for extra instruction and tutors were brought in. Superintendent of Schools Daniel J. Warwick said each tutor would work with two to three students at a time and would also act as mentors. Students would be given more help with math and reading.
Schools involved are the High School of Commerce, Chestnut Accelerated Middle School, Kennedy Middle School, Kiley Middle School and DeBerry Elementary School. Warwick said the money to pay for the extra staff came from a grant.
Warwick pointed out programs like this have proven successful in other communities.
