Poll shows Ole Miss students want to keep 'Colonel Reb' during homecoming

(WMC-TV) - When students name Miss Ole Miss later in the semester, it is still not clear what her male partner will be called.

Historically this person has gone by Colonel Reb after the school's booted mascot, but now the University of Mississippi's student government is voting on a new name.

It has not been easy, as most students polled said they wanted to keep things the same.

The Ole Miss Student Body plans rename the male homecoming personality Tuesday. Before students went home for summer break, the Associated Student Body voted to do away with calling him colonel Reb.

With the homecoming based elections approaching, the clock is ticking to let students know what exactly they will be called if they win.

One student senator has conducted an informal poll asking students to pick the new name. Of the 1,035 students who participated, 20 to 25 percent chose Mr. Ole Miss while 50 to 60 percent wrote in the name Colonel Reb, which the ASB says is not an option.

With a lot of history wrapped up in these names, the ASB not only has current students but alumni to think about when members vote.

The ASB decided Tuesday night that the new name will be Mr. Ole Miss for the 2013 male personality election.
