New car tags to feature region's mountains and lakes

MONTGOMERY, AL (WAFF) -

Say goodbye to "Sweet Home Alabama" and hello to North Alabama's mountains and lakes.

The state is retiring the license plates featuring the famous phrase and the south Alabama coastline at the end of the year.

The new tag, to be available Jan. 1, is designed to show that Alabama has mountains and lakes, according to state Tourism Department spokesman Brian Jones. The new license plate doesn't include the "Sweet Home Alabama" slogan that was on the old tag.

The Revenue Department is also coming out with a new "God Bless America" tag Oct. 1. It has the American flag positioned differently, but it still says "God Bless America" across the bottom.
