SHAWNEE, KS (KCTV) -

Many drivers come to the Phillips 66 gas station at 75th Street and Nieman Road to fill up their cars. But when police got a tip the business was selling more than just gasoline, they went undercover to investigate, resulting in the owner being charged with multiple counts of selling K2.

"A lot of people think, ‘It's just K2, it's no big deal, not harmful.' But many of these components are much higher than even marijuana as far as effects on the body," said Steve Howe, the Johnson County District Attorney.

In June, Shawnee, KS, police got a tip that customers could walk in and buy packages of K2, a chemical copycat of weed that's become a popular drug choice for teens and young adults.

Kansas was the first state in the country to make it illegal back in 2010.

"Clearly in this case we have an established business selling drugs out of the business, that's what we have alleged in the complaint. We treat allegations very seriously and the investigation is continuing at this time," Howe said.

Howe said Raghav Raj, the owner and manager of the Phillips 66, was charged in Johnson County court Tuesday with three felony counts of selling the synthetic K2 drug to undercover officers. He told the judge he will be hiring his own attorney to defend him.

Parents are also very worried because there are schools just a few blocks from the gas station. They said the illegal drug, which comes in colorful packages with names like King Kong and California Dreams, could get in the hands of young kids.

"Kids will think it's candy, might chew it, get high and take to friends. We've got sixth graders. They need to get him for a lot more stuff than just selling K2 because it's a public area and near school. It's scary," Monica Hernandez said.

"That's what a lot of these drug dealers are doing nowadays is packaging them to reach out to teenagers and kids. It looks really harmless and almost looks like bubblegum package or candy. When in fact they're very dangerous drugs," Howe said.

Raj's bond was set at $5,000 cash and his next court date is scheduled for Sept. 4.
