MORRISTOWN, AZ (CBS5) -

Ten horses and ponies, with protruding ribs from lack of food, as well as three goats and four dogs were all seized from a Valley ranch, and the owner is facing charges.

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said deputies served a search warrant Tuesday on the property at 26500 W. Rockaway Hills in Morristown. A veterinarian also responded to the ranch, to look at the animals: seven horses, three ponies, and 20 goats, chickens and dogs.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the horses and goats that were seized will go to Tent City Jail to be taken care of by male inmates. The dogs will go to the First Avenue Jail, which is air conditioned, where women in the jail will look after them.

Morristown is in the far West Valley between Surprise and Wickenburg.

Jesus Torres, 38, was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail and charged with 27 counts of animal abuse.

MCSO said the investigation began when it received a complaint last week.
